VICTORIA (1992),
A THEATRE COMPANY ON THE EDGE OF THE 21st CENTURY...

VICTORIA is a touring theatre company which has chosen to invest in theatre makers. Uptill now, a number of makers like Carla Bakker, Stef Cafmeyer, Wim Opbrouck, Dirk Pauwels, Alain Platel, Mechtild Prins, Arne Sierens, Frank Theys, Peter Halasz a.o. have worked - or are currently working - with VICTORIA on several levels. In addition to creating and producing 'medium & large scale' theatre works - made by experienced theatre makers - which are intended for touring, the house also produces creations by young or beginning theatre makers. VICTORIA also regularly asks young artists to create smaller (one-off) theatre projects which are usually presented at the annual VICTORIA FESTIVAL. With its work, VICTORIA concentrates mainly on a young, adolescent audience. At present (summer 1996), VICTORIA prepares a large- scale theatre project Bernadetje/Bernadette by Alain Platel and Arne Sierens.

For this production, choreographer Alain Platel decided to work with author Arne Sierens. Sierens provided him with 'material' in the broad sense. Main influences: the photographic oeuvre of Nick Waplington, films by Vitali Kanevski, John Cassavetes and walks in working-class quarters...
Mother & Child was especially created for TIME Festival 1995. The performance was selected for the THEATERFESTIVAL 1995 (a collection of the best Dutch-spoken performances) & received the HANS SNOEKPRIJS 1995 (the best Belgian or Dutch youth-theatre production). Bernadetje (Bernadette)

The latest feat of the unique theatrical art of Alain Platel & Arne Sierens : a performance about Bernadette. Yes, that Bernadette! From Lourdes. But, at the fair. (Bernadette in a bumper car!). A religious performance in the broad sense. Boys and girls, hanging around at the fair... In the bumper cars ages mingle and youngsters watch each other. Samples of western rites-de-passage, saints & miracles. Four adults, four adolescents and four children on stage.
